NZ releases guidelines for the safe design of rotary milking platforms

The New Zealand Department of Labour has released a set of guidelines for the design of safe external rotary milking platforms.
A total of 35 hazards are identified and suggested risk controls provided.
The guidelines focus is on potential trapping hazards(for cows and operators) both forward and reverse at cow entry and exit, at deck level and floor level.
Other hazards discussed include, slippery surfaces, electric consoles, platform speeds, below platform running gear, access to central pit, access to milking area from yards, crowding gates and sumps and drains. Hazards associated with both herd testing and maintenance are also discussed.
